I only drink Bloody Marys when I’m on vacation. Or when I’m camping in the woods, relaxing on the beach, on an airplane, out for brunch with my family or friends, or on random weekday mornings when it just sounds delicious.

Science has proven that the savory flavors which combine to create a Bloody Mary taste better at 30,000 feet in a noisy airplane, which is why so many people enjoy Bloody Marys on flights when they are going on vacation. In addition to the flavors, the alcohol also helps you to loosen up a little, unwind and begin relaxing for your trip. But that only partially explains why Bloody Marys also taste so much better outdoors, in the fresh air, when you are sharing them with friends.

When i’m outdoors, camping in the woods or on the beach, I crave a Bloody Mary with breakfast or brunch. It’s not just the savory flavors of the Bloody Marys that I crave, but also the process of preparing them, and the conversations and memories that are created while sharing them with friends and family.

Depending on how it is garnished, a Bloody Mary can be a meal in and of itself. Celery is a staple that has been used to garnish Bloody Marys for nearly a century, but if you do a brief online search, follow #bloodymary on Instagram, or visit any popular breakfast restaurant you will quickly see that there are numerous ways to garnish Bloody Marys with everything from pickled fruits and vegetables to cheeses, meats and seafood. I personally am not a huge fan of celery, but try not to go too overboard when I am making my own Bloody Marys while camping. Sometimes simpler is better and too many toppings can detract from the flavors of the drink itself. I do enjoy the smoky flavor that an extra thick, extra crispy slice of bacon adds to a Bloody Mary as well as the tangy flavor of garlic stuffed olives.

In this video I will show you how to make a simple and delicious Bloody Mary that is full of spice and flavor, all while relaxing at your campsite.

Ingredients:

  • Lime
  • Tajin
  • Coarse Salt
  • Vodka
  • Bloody Mary Mix
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Cholula or other hot sauce
  • Horseradish
  • Garlic Stuffed Green Olives
  • Thick Cut Bacon
  • A friend or two to share with

Keep in mind I’m not a professional bartender or chef and would never claim to be. I don’t measure anything and prepare my Bloody Marys to taste. Mostly I just enjoy a savory cocktail with friends while relaxing in the woods, by the ocean, in the desert…you get the point.

How and where do you like to enjoy your Bloody Marys?  What do you like to garnish them with?  Share your ideas in the comments below!  I look forward to hearing them and taste testing your ideas.

I’d like to give a shout out to Skyy Vodka, Mr & Mrs T’s, TajinWright’s, Morehouse, Cholula and Blackstone for making the particular one in this video so delicious. Also, special thanks to Hefty for making the colorful party cup to hold it. It was so tasty I had to have a second round.

Please consume alcohol responsibly all the time, but especially while you are camping, and don’t drink and ride/drive.

Cheers and happy camping!
